Help us to protect Lansing Farm’s 20 acres of prime farmland as a community farm and keep the land affordable for future generations of farmers.

Lansing Family Farm is a highly productive 20-acre family farm along the Lisha Kill stream near the Niskayuna town line. Surrounded by residential development, it provides welcome open space for the community with rows of flowers, fruit trees, berry bushes, and lush fields.

The Lansing Farm is vital to our community. It provides:
• Fresh produce and wide variety of flowering annual and perennial plants;
• Support for the regional economy by selling other farms’ products at the Market;
• Habitat for insects, birds, and other animals to live and thrive and support for biodiversity;
• Protection of the headwaters and wetlands of the Lisha Kill;
• Meaningful learning experiences for children to develop their knowledge of food and agriculture;
• Local foods, reducing “food miles” to help alleviate our dependence on fossil fuels, reduce air pollution, and cut greenhouse gas emissions;
• Open space for walking and reflection;
• Scenic enjoyment for neighbors, as a recognized neighborhood landmark;
• A continuation of the farming legacy along the Lisha Kill stream; and
• A gathering place, creating a sense of belonging and togetherness for our community.

This vibrant working farm, surrounded by dense development, preserves a piece of the rich agricultural past of the region. However, with just 20 acres remaining of what was once a 1,000-acre farm, the threat of the farm disappearing is real.

Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy aims to purchase a conservation easement on the property that will permanently safeguard the land from development.

What is a Conservation Easement?
A conservation easement is an agreement between a landowner and a land trust that outlines the land use on the property forever. Generally, a conservation easement is a legal document that is filed with your property deed and protects the natural resources on the property, such as significant habitats, viewsheds or fertile soils. The document can prevent future subdivisions, keeping large acreages intact, and can ensure that forests are properly managed and agricultural best management practices are followed. It allows the landowner to continue to own and use the land and to sell it or pass it on to heirs.
